Research Projects
Research activities at the Department of South Asia Studies encompass a region extending from Pakistan, across northern India, to Bengal, and to southeastern India, Orissa and Tamil Nadu. One area of research is concerned with urban history and urbanization, particularly of Delhi and Kolkata. Within this research emphasis, attention is devoted equally to environmental history, social and economic history, and intellectual, literary and language history. Another area of investigation focuses on the historiography of Pakistan and India. A third research emphasis lies in historical and political issues of Pakistan, as well as regional developments such as the emergence of early modern states and the formation of social groups.
