PROFILE

Manja Stephan-Emmrich has studied Anthropology and Central Asian Studies at the University of Leipzig, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin.

2002 - 2006 she was a member of the international projects "Civil Religion" at the Max-Planck-Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale, and "Islamic Education in the Soviet Union and its Successor States" at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. She received her PhD in Social Anthropology from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (PhD title: "In Need of Balance: Moral Education, Islam and Being Muslim in Tajikistan Between Secularization and Religious Revival" (in German)).

Since May 2010 Manja Stephan-Emmrich has been the Junior Professor for the cross-section Islam in Asian and African Societies at the Institute of Asian and African Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In addition she has been the Principal Investigator (PI) at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (funded within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative, FU Berlin) since 2011.

In the summer term of 2014 she was a visiting professor at the Department for Southeast Asian History and Society at the Institute of Asian and African Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

In the summer term of 2016 she was a fellow of the international research center re:work. Work and Human Lifecycle in Global History, and in the following winter term she worked as a visiting scholar at the research network "Re-Configurations. History, Remembrance and Transformation Processes in the Middle East and North Africa" at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

Her research interests cover Islamic education, the transmission of religious and moral knowledge, the anthropology of religion, Islamic piety, urban religion, youth and family studies, and the entanglement of migration/mobility and religion. Her regional focus is on Central Asia (Tajikistan). She carries out fieldwork in Tajikistan and the United Arab Emirates.

In her current research project Manja Stephan-Emmrich is investigating the complex entanglements of translocal Islamic educational networks, youth work experiences, and lifeworlds that span Tajikistan and the Arab world.

Since April 2013, she has been leading the research project "Translocal Goods - Education, Work, and Commodities between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, China, and the Arab Emirates". The project is funded by the Volkswagenstiftung.

In her teachings Manja Stephan-Emmrich combines theoretical perspectives from Anthropology and Area Studies with ethnographic case studies. Following a transregional approach, her courses cover a wide range of topics such as Islamic education, youth/generation, the anthropology of Islam, Muslim subjectivities, secularism, urban religion, migration/mobility and religion, translocality, and globalization.
