Personal Background
Hisami Shimba (born in Shizuoka, Japan) is a Japanese Language Lecturer in the East Asian Studies Department. She studied psychology and English at Shizuoka University (1979-1984), earned Master’s Degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language from Boston University, Boston, USA (1988-1989) and in Language Acquisition at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA (1989-1990).
Since 2009, she has worked in Germany as a lecturer in Japanese in the Department of East Asian Studies at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (2009-2015), in the Department of Japanese and Korean Studies at the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (2019-2021), and at the Institute for Japanese Studies at the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg (2022).
Under contracts with the Japan Foundation, she worked as a Japanese Language Advisor and Visiting Lecturer in the ACT Department of Education, Australia (1998-1999), the Department of Education and Science, Ireland (2005-2007) and the Japan Cultural Institute in Cologne, Germany (2015-2018). She also conducted many teacher training programs and developed materials including the official leaving certificate textbook, Nihongo Kantan, (2007) in Ireland.
