ABSTRACT
This talk critiques social histories of labor, and genealogies of labor universalism more broadly in an effort to revisit (and rethink standard narratives of) the caste-class debates as these were played out in late colonial and postcolonial Bombay. The paper addresses conceptual closures to exploring lifeworlds and emancipatory logics that are outside recognizable domains of 'the political,' by exploring the forms of critical thought and cultural production enabled by intersections between stigmatized life, and the social experience of labor. By so doing, the paper seeks to outline what I call a Dalit theory of materiality and of urban form that was the distinct product of Ambedkarite and working-class political cultures of late colonial, and postcolonial Bombay.
