  The critical discourse of cultural appropriation is currently met with a lack of understanding in the German media public. A central accusation is that this discourse is based on an essentializing and ethnicized understanding of culture and thus seeks to maintain or redraw boundaries between cultures that are presented as homogeneous and holistic - in other words, it is attached to a concept of culture that we also discuss very critically in the regional sciences on the basis of theoretical approaches from postcolonial theory, cultural studies and transcultural studies. In the first phase of the research seminar, we will deal with this accusation - as well as possible counter-arguments - in a differentiated manner. On the basis of concrete examples and debates on cultural appropriation or cultural property in South and Southeast Asia, the next step is to approach the question of which critical perspectives we can contribute to this important field of knowledge as well as to the public debate from the perspective of regional studies.
  The research seminar is scheduled for two semesters and will be continued in module 2 of SoSe 2021. The second part will focus on the development and implementation of small independent research projects. However, the courses can also be taken individually.

Sounds of Resistance: Musik, Digitale Medien und Protest in Indien

As expressions of political protest and resistance, hip-hop and rap have become increasingly important in many regions and languages of India in recent years. In terms of lyrics and music, they have established manifold references to other protest music cultures in South Asia, such as 'Ambedkarite Protest Music' or so-called 'Folk Music'. Digital media (practices) play a central role in networking and dissemination - can they also be regarded as constitutive for an emerging counter-public sphere? We will deal with this question in the course of the seminar by means of current examples and, if possible, also analyze individual song lyrics in more detail. In the first part of the seminar we will work out a theoretical basis for counter-public and contemporary protest music cultures in South Asia, in the second part we will take a closer look at individual case studies in the context of group work.
The course is scheduled for two semesters and is to be continued in the summer semester 2021 as part of a research-oriented advanced course. However, participation in both courses is not obligatory.

Particularly under time pressure, thoughts and words often do not want to flow as freely as the deadlines for written work during the course of study require. Also the formal and linguistic requirements for "scientific writing" sometimes seem unsettling. In four workshops, each lasting four hours, we deal with practical questions of writing organization, strategies for dealing with slack periods and techniques of scientific writing. In the last two workshops, writing exercises on freely chosen topics are conducted and discussed in smaller teams or tandem groups.
The workshops will be continued in the summer semester of 2021 (participation in the first seminar is a prerequisite). In the second part of the series, the focus will be on writing longer texts or exposés for research purposes.
The obligatory participation in all five workshops in winter term 2020/21 is required.
